Pluto: A Planet or a Trans-Neptunian Object?
نویسنده
چکیده
The purposes of classification and taxonomy are reviewed. Using examples from fields ranging from paleontology to planetology, I argue that non-exclusive classifications, which allow Pluto to be considered both a planet and a TNO, provide the most desirable approach to progress in our science.

Pluto and the Platypus or: The Role of Classificatory Norms1
Many astronomers seem to believe that we have discovered that Pluto is not a planet. But this is not so. Recent discoveries of trans-Neptunian Pluto-sized objects do not militate for Pluto’s expulsion from the planets unless we have prior reason for not simply counting these newly-discovered objects among the planets. I argue that this classificatory controversy — which I compare to the controv...

متن کاملDynamics of the Edgeworth{kuiper Objects Trans Neptunian Planets and Comets
The recently discovered Edgeworth{Kuiper Objects (EKO) have orbits in a region of the phase space whose dynamics had previously been investigated, either in connection with Pluto or seeking for stable regions for surviving primordial material. The theories are adequate to explain, and predict, the stability regions, and also to constrain theories on the origin of these bodies. To the contrary, ...
متن کاملGeneration of Highly Inclined Trans-neptunian Objects by Planet Nine
The trans-Neptunian region of the solar system exhibits an intricate dynamical structure, much of which can be explained by an instability-driven orbital history of the giant planets. However, the origins of a highly inclined, and in certain cases retrograde, population of trans-Neptunian objects remain elusive within the framework of this evolutionary picture. In this work, we show that the ex...
متن کاملBinary Minor Planets
A review of observations and theories regarding binary asteroids and binary transNeptunian objects [collectively, binary minor planets (BMPs)] is presented. To date, these objects have been discovered using a combination of direct imaging, lightcurve analysis, and radar. They are found throughout the Solar System, and present a challenge for theorists modeling their formation in the context of ...
